Germany reports another record daily increase of 18,681 new cases, most of the country considered “high risk”

Germany has reported another record daily increase in coronavirus infections, an increase of 18,681 new cases. as the latest statistics released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Friday have shown.

The number of total cases now stand at 499,694, close to the 500,000 level. On Thursday, the total count increased by 16,774.

New deaths increased by 77, while the total count accelerated to 10,349. Meanwhile, active cases in the country are around 130,000.

According to the RKI, 314 districts out of 412 in Germany are now considered “high risk”.

Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Thursday that health centers are close to the limits of their capacity and added that the number of virus patients in ICUs has doubled in the last 10 days.

Meanwhile, Spanish health authorities announced a state of emergency until early May, giving the regions legal backing to decide curfews and restrict travel to try to contain the rapid spread of the virus.

As Europe struggles with the second wave, Australian officials reported the fewest active COVID-19 cases in the country in four months. The country reported just under 200 active cases, down from a peak of just over 8,000 in mid-August, Reuters reports.
