Germany reports more than 100,000 daily cases of Covid-19 for the first time

Germany recorded 112,323 new cases of Covid-19 this Wednesday (19), a new daily record. According to the Minister of Health, the peak has not yet been reached and mandatory vaccination should be introduced by May.

The count of Covid-19 infections in Germany since the start of the pandemic is 8,186,850, according to the Robert Koch Health Institute (RKI). The number of deaths also increased by 239 to 116,081 in total.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said he expected the new wave of infections to peak in a few weeks as the Ômicron variant raised Germany’s seven-day incidence rate to 584.4 cases per 100,000 people.

“I think we’ll hit the peak of the wave in mid-February and then the number of cases could drop again,” Lauterbach said Tuesday.

The minister said he believed the current number of unreported cases could be about twice as many as known.

He said mandatory vaccination should be introduced quickly, in April or May, to prevent another wave of infections with possible new variants in the fall.
