Germany: Restrictions on coronavirus restrictions expected before Easter

“Convinced” that in a few weeks it will be possible to relax the measures for the pandemic, said the Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, who in the meantime expects the peak of the wave of the “Omicron” variant around the middle of February.

“I believe we can significantly ease the restrictions before Easter,” Lauterbach told BILD television, noting that the current peak forecast for the coming weeks had been confirmed. However, he warned of the danger of early lifting of restrictions. “Let’s not share the bear’s fur before we kill it,” he said, ruling out the possibility of any relaxation being discussed at the next meeting of the state’s prime ministers with the chancellor. “It would be crazy. What would happen if Germany followed what Britain did? We would have 300 dead a day, while now we have significantly fewer, 60-80,” he said.

The Minister of Health again supported the introduction of the obligation to vaccinate against COVID-19, stressing that, if implemented by the autumn, “the threat will be largely addressed, as we will have closed the vaccination gap”. He clarified, however, that the obligation should concern all citizens over the age of 18 and not, as many MEPs suggest, those over the age of 50. “This way we will have faced the controversy without solving the problem,” the minister pointed out.

Referring to his disagreement with the Robert Koch Institute, which he said surprised him with the decision to limit the validity of the cure certificate to three out of six months, Lauterbach said it was “not right”. , but rejected the general criticism leveled at the head of the Lothar Wheeler Institute by the ruling Liberals (FDP). “Mr Wheeler has done a very important and good job over the last two years and he still trusts me. It’s so simple,” he said. Over the weekend, FDP officials said they no longer considered the head of the Robert Koch Institute to be credible because of the healing certificate case, but also his study of calling for tougher Christmas measures before the federation even meets with the federation.
