In Germany technology has become a learning vehicle for a seven-year-old boy who, being seriously ill, cannot go to school.
Little Joshua from Berlin suffers from a rare respiratory disease that does not allow him to go to school. The little boy, however, does not miss any of his lessons. Technology is coming to provide the solution. A small robot is at Joshua’s desk and helps him not to lose any tradition.
The little robot is equipped with a high-definition camera but also powerful microphones that transfer to Joshua’s room the knowledge that his illness deprives him of.
Joshua has a tracheostomy. When he was one year old he had to have surgery and the doctors told us that he would either stay in an artificial party for three months or have a tracheostomy for at least two years.
Through the robot, however, Joshua is not a mere spectator of the lessons.
“I can ask permission and the robot to get the message across and talk to the class,” Joshua says.
In addition to lessons, the little boy has the opportunity through the little robot to see his friends and classmates, filling even a few moments with smiles his tired face.
The robot has been specially designed for young children by a Norwegian company and the cost has been fully covered by the municipality where little Joshua lives, who hopes to be close to his friends and teachers soon.
