Incumbent Co-Chair Saskia Esken and Secretary-General Lars Klingbail will be joint candidates for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) at the Congress in December.
According to the German News Agency (dpa), the two top SPD executives announced their candidacy earlier today at a meeting of the party’s presidency, which accepted it and forwarded it to the Executive Committee. According to Der Spiegel, the candidacy was confirmed by the enlarged body. It will, however, have to be ratified at the Conference, 10-12 December.
Ms. Esken’s co-chair, Norbert Walter-Bourgeois, and Chancellor-designate Olaf Soltz have already announced that they are not interested in the position, but it is possible that there may be other candidates for the party’s leading duo.
The change in the leadership of the SPD is expected to affect the negotiations for the formation of a government, as Ms. Esken has a different view from Mr. Walter-Bourjans, who had stated that the two co-chairs should not be members of the government. Mr. Klingbail, on the other hand, is considered a candidate for Secretary of Defense.
