Germany cannot rely on gas supplies from Russia’s Gazprom next winter once maintenance work on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is completed this week, according to German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, Bloomberg reported.
Gazprom has halted gas deliveries to Europe through its pipeline for three days, it said, starting on Wednesday, further cutting supplies as Germany tries to fill its warehouses. Habeck and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have accused the Kremlin of using Europe’s dependence on Russian energy as a weapon to retaliate against sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine.
At a press conference in Berlin on Thursday, Habeck was asked whether he expected Gazprom to resume gas deliveries through the pipeline once maintenance work was completed and whether the government was in contact with the Russian company. “There are no direct talks between my ministry and Gazprom,” Hambek told reporters. “What I expect is that we cannot rely in any way on Russia or Gazprom, the rest is pure speculation,” he added. “We should not count on gas coming through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline during the winter.”
