With just a few days left to the self-imposed deadline of October 15 for Brexit talks to reach a conclusion, a meeting between chancellor Angela Merkel and European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier was held in Berlin today morning.
The purpose of this meeting was to have a discussion about the ongoing trade negotiations between the UK and the bloc.
A short meeting also took place between Michel Barnier and Heiko Mass, who regarded no-deal Brexit as “irresponsible” especially because of It happening when the economy was already dealing with the health and economic challenges from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Mass said: “With today’s health and economic challenges, people on both sides of the channel have enough to shoulder, so it would be totally irresponsible to burden them in this position with the additional problems through a no-deal.”
After the meeting, the European Union Chief stated that EU was still open to negotiate on basis of a deal. “Our door is still open for a close and ambitious partnership with Britain,” he included.
He furthermore said that though it is crucially important that a fair deal is reached, it has become quite tough to negotiate properly due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
15 October has been declared as the deadline for reaching a trade deal between UK and EU. Moreover, the negotiations are supposed to be completed by October 31st.
