Germany: Significant losses of the CDU Christian Democrats in the two-state elections

His defeat Christian Democratic Party (CDU) with significant losses show the first official estimates for elections both in Baden-Württemberg and in the Rhineland-Palatinate.

According to the first channel of the German public television ARD, in Baden-Württemberg the Greens remain the strongest party with 31% (+0.7 from the 2016 elections), while the CDU follows with 23% (-4.0). The Social Democratic Party (SPD) emerges as the third force with 12% (-0.7%), leaving in fourth place the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 11.5% (-3.6). A percentage of 11.5% seems to be secured by the Liberals (+3.2). The Left remains outside the local parliament, with 3.5% (+0.6), as the electoral measure is at 5%.

If the result is confirmed, the ruling Greens-CDU coalition can continue or a Green-SPD-FDP government can be formed.

In the Rhineland-Palatinate, the SPD leads with 34.5% (-1.7), followed by the CDU with 26% (-5.8). The third force remains the AfD with 10.5% (-2.1), followed by the FDP with 6.5% (+0.3) and the Greens with 8.5% (+3.2). The Left remains out of this parliament as well, with 2.5% (-0.3). The SPD-FDP-Greens alliance retains a majority and could continue to rule.

In addition to the loss of power for the Christian Democratic Party, which is blamed for both the deterioration of government policy on the pandemic and the ongoing lockdown, as well as the recent scandal over the supply of protective masks involving Christian Union (CDU / CSU) politicians. , a key feature seems to have been the letter vote, which, due to restrictions on the coronavirus, reached record levels. In Baden-Württemberg 50% of the voters voted by letter, while in Rhineland-Palatinate the 65% voted by mail. The previous record was set in the Bavarian state elections in 2020 with 39%.
