Germany: SPD again climbs above 20% in voter preference

According to a poll by the Insa Institute for the “Bild am Sonntag” newspaper, the Social Democrats can again slightly gain the favor of the voters. If Bundestag elections were held on Sunday, the SPD would again reach 20 percent for the first time since early July, one percentage point more than last week, the newspaper said in the survey.

The Greens would remain stable at 21% and the CDU/CSU would be the strongest force with 28%. The FDP will remain unchanged at 8% of voters and the AfD at 12%.

The Left Party remains at 5%, while the other parties could gather 6% of the vote.

The next mood test for the entire Federal Republic will take place on October 9 with the election in the state of Lower Saxony. It is the last state election of this year.

In the opinion polls, the SPD led by Prime Minister Stephan Weil is clearly ahead of the CDU and the Greens. But Russia’s attack on Ukraine on February 24 left its mark on Lower Saxony as well. It’s hard to say what influence concerns about inflation and the gas crisis will have on the election,” says Manfred Güllner, head of the Forsa polling institute.

In the latest poll in Lower Saxony, the SPD was still at 30% in early July. But the lead over the co-ruling CDU has been shrinking steadily in recent months.

If the SPD were to lose the position of minister-president in Hanover, this would likely cause major shocks in Berlin. After all, Weil has been governing in Hanover for eight years and, according to Philip Koker of the University of Hanover, is an asset to his party.
