Germany: SPD co-chairman skeptical about sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine

The co-president of her ruling Social Democratic Party is skeptical Germany (SPD), Lars Klingbeil, Ukraine’s calls to send German Leopard tanks without a NATO decision.

“No country is delivering armored tanks like the Leopard 1 or 2”Klingbeil emphasized in an interview he gave to the RTL and NTV networks.

After denouncing Russian atrocities in Ukraine and pointed out that Vladimir Putin has criticized the West for military aid to Kyiv, underlined that “it is important that the Americans, the French, and we as the federal government of Germany weigh again and again our involvement in this war.”

For the German government, he said, it has always been important not to act alone when it comes to military aid to Ukraine.

A few days ago, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Berlin would deliver 40 Marder combat vehicles and a Patriot array to Kyiv, despite months of avoiding meeting similar requests made by the Ukrainian government.

The military aid was announced in a joint statement by the US and German governments, issued following a telephone conversation between US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Berlin did not include the powerful Leopard tanks in the military aid package to Ukraine, despite pressure from some members of the three-party government coalition.

For its part, France recently announced that it will reinforce the Ukrainian army with armored wheeled vehicles.

“The delivery of armored personnel carriers is a signal that the Western alliance is acting in close coordination and continues to support Ukraine”Klingbeil said in an interview he gave to the RND network.
