Germany: The border situation continues to be worrying

The Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Fesser, speaks of a “continuing alarming situation” at the German border and an “unacceptably high” number of illegal entries into the country in her letter to the European Commission, with which she informs about Berlin’s decision to reintroduce controls along of the borders. The letter refers to a “dramatic deterioration in citizens’ sense of security” following recent violent crimes and describes the Dublin Process as “increasingly dysfunctional”. Federal resources are “almost exhausted,” Ms. Feser wrote in her letter, revealed by Der Spiegel magazine, citing a “constantly worsening already tense situation” in municipalities and communities on the issue of housing immigrants. “Immigration services are increasingly reaching the limits of what they can afford in terms of reception, accommodation and care”, says the minister, who even warns of the risk of “overburdening the solidarity of society”.
