Germany: The gas operator considers the flows from Russia to be guaranteed

Uniper, Germany’s gas operator, says flows from Russia to the country are guaranteed, despite a power outage to Poland and Bulgaria today.

In particular, according to Reuters, the company that published yesterday its preliminary results for the quarter, also confirmed that it will be able to pay for gas under the plan proposed by Moscow, which requires payments in rubles.

Speaking to analysts, Uniper’s chief financial officer Tiina Tuomela said flows through Poland destined for other recipients on the Yamal main pipeline were not affected at this time.

She said that Uniper uses a mechanism that allows payments in euros, which are converted into rubles by a Russian bank, which according to the assessment of the European Union does not violate the sanctions, adding that the next payment under this scheme is expected at the end May.

It is recalled that the Russian company Gazprom cut off gas supplies this morning to Bulgaria and Poland because they did not pay the energy giant in rubles.

“This concerns the agreement between Warsaw and Gazprom. Therefore, it will not have an impact on the transit of volumes through Poland,” Uniper Chief Commercial Officer Niek den Hollander told analysts.

“Thus, any third party, for example Germany, can theoretically continue to use the route through the Yamal pipeline,” he added.
