The Human Rights Committee of the Federal Parliament plans to visit Taiwan at the end of October. The trip, which also includes visits to Japan and Hong Kong, was planned ahead of a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
According to the German News Agency (dpa), the visit will take place from October 22 to 30 and members of other Bundestag committees are expected to participate in the mission. According to Christian Democratic Party (CDU) human rights expert Michael Brandt, who will join the mission, possible reactions from Beijing “are not a reason to cancel” his participation or the visit. “The Chinese leadership needs to be careful that it doesn’t just become a dragon, spewing threats on the international stage. It needs a little more Asian discipline,” Mr Brandt said.
The Human Rights Commission had also planned a visit to Taiwan in 2020, but had to cancel it due to the coronavirus pandemic.
