The number of Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Germany in recent days is 18,436, the Interior Ministry announced today, noting that just yesterday the number was 9,436.
However, the real number of refugees from Ukraine is likely to be significantly higher, the ministry clarified, as at the border e.g. with Poland controls have increased, but they remain isolated and not systematic.
The vast majority of refugees are women and children. About 15,000 are Ukrainian citizens, while the rest are third-country nationals who lived in Ukraine until the Russian invasion.
Six trains arrived in Berlin yesterday and operated special services from Frankfurt am Main to the German-Polish border, transporting about 5,000 refugees from Ukraine. Many volunteers had gathered at the main train station, as well as a crowd of people welcoming the refugees with placards.
Many even held up signs stating that they could accommodate some in their own home.
