Germany: The proposal for compulsory vaccination of people over 60 did not pass the Bundestag

The proposal for compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 in people over the age of 60 has not recently garnered the required majority in the Federal Parliament.

The proposal was voted in favor by 296 deputies, while 378 voted against and nine deputies abstained.

The proposal was backed mainly by lawmakers from the ruling coalition parties (SPD, Greens, FDP), while party leaders had lifted party discipline rules, allowing lawmakers to vote conscientiously. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left supported the rejection of compulsory vaccination, while the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) had submitted its own proposal for a national immunization register before the introduction of compulsory vaccination, which was also rejected.

As Chancellor Olaf Solz, as well as Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, had personally advocated for the mandatory vaccination of all adults, the ruling coalition suffered its first major parliamentary defeat today.
