Germany: The Social Democrats are a stone’s throw away from the Conservatives

The recovering Social Democrats (21%) are now within walking distance of the Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists (23%) who remain on a downward trajectory, according to an ARD poll.

Social Democrat Olaf Solz remains first in the preference for chancellor (41%). They are followed by the conservative Armin Lasset (16%) and the Green Analena Berbok (12%).

If the general elections held on Sunday, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) would receive 21%, according to a poll by the Infratest Institute conducted on behalf of the first public broadcasting network ARD. In other words, it would receive 3 percentage points more than the previous ARD poll and would record its highest percentage since January 2018.

The Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists (CDU / CSU) would receive 23% of the vote and would lose four percentage points from the previous ARD poll.

17% (-2%) would choose the Greens and 13% (+ 1%) the Liberal Party (FDP). The percentage of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is 11% (+ 1%) and that of the Left Party (Die Linke) 7% (+ 1%).

Coalition government under the Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists (CDU / CSU) prefers 30% (-5% over the previous poll), as well as another 30% (+ 6%) wanting a coalition government under the Social Democrats. Government under the Greens prefers 15% (-1%), while 25% of respondents still do not express any preference. In the -theoretical- case of direct election of a chancellor, 41% (+ 6%) of Germans would vote for Olaf Solz as the successor to the current chancellor Merkel. 16% (-4%) would like to see conservative Armin Lasset as chancellor and 12% (-4%) would like Green Alena Berbock. Three out of ten respondents, namely 31% (+ 2%) can not or do not want to commit to any of the three candidates for chancellor.
