Germany: Three injured in an attack on protesters near the Iranian embassy

Three men were injured in Berlin today when peaceful protesters near the Iranian embassy were attacked by masked men and then fled, German police said.

The attackers, their faces covered with scarves, pulled down flags and banners hanging from a caravan parked near the Iranian embassy. The attackers then tried to open the door of the caravan and a fight broke out between the attackers and the occupants of the vehicle.

Three of the protesters were injured, two of whom were hospitalized, according to police. The perpetrators fled in a car.

The caravan was decorated with banners emblazoned with slogans such as “Woman, Life, Freedom!”, one of the slogans in the protests that have rocked Iran for weeks.

The Islamic Republic is reeling from a wave of protest sparked by the September 16 death of Masha Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, who died three days after she was arrested in Tehran by morality police for not wearing her headscarf “properly”. To the original slogan of “women, life, freedom” were subsequently added slogans directed directly against the leadership of Iran.

Iranian authorities’ crackdown on protests has left at least 160 dead, including around 20 children, according to a tally released by the Oslo-based non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR).

Many demonstrations in support of the Iranian protesters have been held in Germany and other European countries.
