The German Finance Ministry has approved the supply of 2,700 anti-aircraft missiles to the Ukrainian army after the invasion of Russia, sources close to it told the German Agency.
These are Soviet-made Strela-type missiles, which were in stock with the armed forces of the former GDR, the sources explained.
The government of Chancellor Olaf Soltz has now decided to reverse Berlin’s arms embargo policy, which has been in place for years, to allow direct arms deliveries to Ukraine following the Russian military invasion.
The dpa is informed that the German Ministry of Defense is studying in the last few days what kind of other weapons could be supplied to Kyiv in the near future.
For years the German government refused to approve arms exports to war zones or to allow third parties to send German-made weapons to them.
