Germany: Ukrainian ambassador urges Berlin ‘not to make a bad compromise’

Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin, Andrzej Melnik, has called on the German government not to make a “bad compromise on our heads”, citing a statement by Chancellor Olaf Soltz that Ukraine’s possible accession to NATO “.

Mr Malnik told the Funke Group newspapers that “the point is not only to prevent a Russian war in Europe”, but also to avoid agreements that would cost Ukrainians their future.

The Ukrainian ambassador also said that Germany should not, with concessions to Russian President Putin, on the one hand claim that we have a free choice of allies and on the other hand postpone our membership in NATO in the distant future, while expressing hope Mr. Solz to soon host a summit of the Normandy Group in Berlin, “in order to overcome this dangerous silence and radio silence between the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the President of the Russian Federation”.

In the same context, the German ambassador to the USA Emily Humber, in a post on Twitter, spoke about Ukraine’s “sovereign right” to seek NATO membership. “The country is free to choose its path. We will not guarantee anything different to the President of Russia,” the German diplomat wrote.
