Germany: ” Unprecedented ” arms exports in 2021

A former member of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has defended the approval of billions of dollars worth of arms exports by the caretaker government shortly before handing over to the new government this month.

“The actions of the federal caretaker government were within the framework of the law. Consequently, the criticism of the Greens and the Left is nothing more than crocodile tears,” argued Roderick Kiseveter, the CDU’s foreign policy expert.

The caretaker federal government of the “grand coalition”, which included the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD), has approved exports worth almost 5 billion euros in its last nine days in power.

The value of arms exports with a government license this year thus exceeded 9 billion euros. This is an unprecedented amount.

The country that imported most of them was Egypt, whose government has been criticized for human rights abuses and its involvement in armed conflicts in Yemen and Libya.

The new government, led by the center-left SPD, with partners the Greens and the Free Democrats (FDP), is planning to reform arms export regulations to limit sales to so-called third countries outside the European Union and NATO.
