Germany: ‘We will implement every NATO request’

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht assured that the German armed forces would comply with “any request” from the eastern NATO member states and rejected criticism of the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness.

“As Germany, we will respond to any request in this area, to any need that may arise. We are able to do so,” Ms. Lambrecht said during a meeting of the Federal Parliament’s Defense Committee. has recently increased its forces in Lithuania, and has now been instructed to expand the presence of the German armed forces in Romania, to monitor the region’s airspace. “More will follow. We are in the process of preparing for everything,” she said, adding that “we are doing everything we can to meet NATO’s expected demands.”

Ms. Lambrecht, however, rejected criticism from the German armed forces of their operational readiness, especially in terms of technical equipment. Earlier, former military inspector Alphonse Meiss had said that after years of austerity, the Bundeswehr was “more or less ambiguous” and had only limited options over Russia.
