Germany-Weber: Soltz splits West over heavy weapons tradition

European politician Manfred Weber (Germany, CSU) criticized Chancellor Olaf Solz (SPD) ahead of the war in Ukraine. Of course, prudence is essential, Weber told the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Monday. But this “should not lead to a lack of determination.” The EPP leader in the European Parliament reacted to the statements of the German chancellor in the news magazine “Der Spiegel”.

Asked about his reluctance to surrender arms, Soltz told the news magazine that he needed “calm and well-thought-out decisions” and that he was doing everything he could to prevent an escalation that would lead to a third world war. “There must be no nuclear war.”

Weber told SZ that when Soltz was arguing for a possible nuclear war, he was stepping up Putin’s propaganda. The chancellor “thus divides the West, because all those who justifiably supply heavy weapons – such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia or the Baltic states – are in the corner.” But no distinction should be made between “morally good” and warlike Western states. From the beginning, Putin had relied on the West’s fear of nuclear weapons, which is now reinforced by even Soltz, Weber criticized. The only thing that would help against Putin was “strength and determination.”
