Germany will approve the delivery of armor to Kyiv

Germany will approve the delivery to Ukraine of self-propelled anti-aircraft systems “Gepard”, said today a member of the ruling coalition.

Johannes Vogel, of the Free Democrats (FDP), confirmed the information of the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung that the German Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht is going to make this announcement in her meeting today with allied countries at the American air base in Ramstad.

Under the plan, the Krauss-Maffei Wefgmann arms industry will be allowed to send the armor, which it will make from tanks and spare parts held by the German army, making modifications where necessary.

About 40 countries will attend today, at the invitation of the United States, a meeting at the Rammstein base aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense.

On Monday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that Ukraine “can win” the war against Russia, “if it has good equipment, good support.”

“The United States, which offers the greatest military assistance to Ukraine, wants to ‘give it the kind of support, the kind of artillery and ammunition that will be effective at this stage of the war,'” Austin told a news conference. Poland yesterday, after visiting Kyiv on Sunday.

Ukraine is mainly seeking heavy artillery and armor to repel Russian forces from the vast plains in the south and east of the country, but Russian-made equipment that Ukrainians have been trained to use is rare.

Some Eastern European countries that still have stocks send them to Kyiv, sometimes in exchange for new-generation American weapons.

France has already announced that it will send 40-kilometer Caesar cannons and Britain will send Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and armor.

German Chancellor Olaf Solz has been criticized by neighboring countries and the Baltic states for refusing to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine.

In Germany, the political controversy over the issue is intense, even within the governing coalition, with the Greens and the FDP deeming Berlin’s support for Kyiv insufficient and for weeks urging Soltz to allow delivery of offensive equipment, mainly armor.
