Germany will buy 60 Chinook helicopters to replace its aging fleet

Germany to buy 60 Chinook helicopters from Boeing to replace aging CH-53 fleet .

“With this model we are strengthening our ability to work together in Europe,” Lambrecht added during a speech to the Bundestag lower house.

According to previous data, the Bundeswehr was to acquire 45 to 60 helicopters for about 4 billion euros, which will be delivered between 2023 and 2029.

Boeing, with the trademark Chinook, and Sikorsky, Lockheed, with the CH-53K, are the only Western companies to offer this type of military helicopter.

The German army has been flying the CH-53 since the 1970s and aims to phase it out by 2030.

The Bundeswehr relied heavily on the old CH-53 for its military mission in Afghanistan, but the operation also revealed the weaknesses of the aging helicopter, with much maintenance required to keep it afloat.
