Germany will continue to operate the country’s last three nuclear plants

Germany plans to delay the shutdown of the country’s last three nuclear power plants as it prepares for possible power shortages this winter after Russia cut gas supplies to the country, German government officials said, the WSJ reports.

Although temporary, the move is the first departure from a policy that began in the early 2000s to phase out nuclear power in Germany.

The decision has yet to be formally approved by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s cabinet and will likely need to be voted on in parliament.

Some details are still under discussion, three senior government officials said.

A cabinet decision will also have to await the outcome of the assessment of Germany’s energy needs to be completed in the coming weeks.

However, although the official decision may come weeks away, the government believes that two key conditions have been met to allow for the temporary extension of the life of the three nuclear power plants: Germany is facing a possible shortage of natural gas, while the “green light ” to keep the reactors running does not pose a safety concern, officials say.

“The reactors are safe until December 31st and will obviously remain safe after December 31st,” a senior official said, as reported by the WSJ.
