The main medical research body in Ghana announced on Thursday that 34 cases of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus in the African country have been confirmed.
The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) explained that 34 cases were detected after examining samples from 120 passengers at Kotoka International Airport from November 21st to November 24th. These are “the first imported cases” of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in Ghana, the institute said, noting that their number corresponds to 28% of the tests performed.
Ghanaian authorities announced this month that vaccination of the country’s citizens (30.8 million) against COVID-19 will become mandatory. To date, the percentage of fully vaccinated Ghanaians does not exceed 2.7%.
Officially, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Ghana is just over 1,200 due to COVID-19 out of a total of 131,000 SARS-CoV-2 infections.
