Choreographer of the play “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert”, Mariana Barros became the target of the dancer’s criticism Makayla Sabino after Reynaldo Gianecchini share a video dancing to the song “Vogue” by Madonna.
In an interview with CNN the professional who has worked in the musical theater market for 20 years, as a teacher of musical jazz, classical and tap, explained that the video was recorded in January this year, after finishing a jazz class with the actor.
“I wasn’t teaching him voguing, it was a choreographic study, because I was learning the dance style, to use the references, since ‘Priscilla’ has a lot of this language and the director would like me, perhaps, to have this language too. reference in dance”, explained Mariana.
“We were taking a jazz class and at the end I wanted to understand, for his body to assimilate, in case I brought any reference to waacking or something for movement”, he added.
Also according to Mariana, after the video recorded in January, she continued studying voguing with qualified teachers. “My concern was always to create language that would not be offensive to anyone.”
“As a choreographer, I worry a lot about this, about not going over anyone or even building something that I don’t have control over”, guaranteed Mariana Barros.
The choreographer also made a point of highlighting that Reynaldo Gianecchini will not present the dance style in the play “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert” something that will be the responsibility of the dancers — who will be duly rehearsed by specialized professionals.
“I understand how important this language is for this community, which is so active and so important in the dance world. I completely understand the repercussions. I’m sorry for this mistake, but I wasn’t teaching anyone. I’m not a voguing teacher, because I don’t have the skills to teach this modality”, Mariana further stated.
Understand the controversy
After Reynaldo Gianecchini shared a video on his social networks dancing to Madonna’s song “Vogue”, trans dancer Makayla Sabino spoke out on social networks criticizing the fact that the actor learned the choreography from a professional who is not specialized in the voguing style.
The dancer, who works with artists like Iza, also recalled the origins of the dance style, started by trans and black people. “Why don’t they give us the opportunity to do what we know and what we create? If he’s playing a role where he’s going to represent Vogue, he doesn’t have to represent Madonna, he has to represent Ballroom culture,” said Makayla.
