The body of Gianfranco Bonzi, doorman of a building in via Borgonuovo, in the Brera district, was found in the Adda river, in Crotta d’Adda, in the Cremona area. he had been missing from Milan since March 23rd: DNA tests confirmed his identity. The hypothesis is that the 59-year-old killed himself.
He had been the victim of a “romantic” scam: in the last few months he had been tricked by a woman pretending to be singer Dua Lipa and who sent him photos and love messages, calling herself “wife”. At a certain point, the scammer also allegedly started asking him for money: first modest sums, always repaid, to show he was reliable, then, at the end of February, five thousand euros.
Gianfranco Bonzi had confided in a colleague, who – sensing that it was a “romantic” scam, like the one that also victimized volleyball player Roberto Cazzaniga – had warned him. Also Federica Sciarellihost of the program Who has seen?, he had tried to talk to the woman on the phone who pretended to be Dua Lipa, but also asked the journalist for money for her revelations.
“He told me he called him ‘my love,'” a friend of the man told the show. “I think he made two withdrawals at the bank at the end of February, two tranches of 2,500, and in early March he told me that he had sent her the money. I think that this person then disappeared. He was nervous, he was upset. He was convinced of the relationship he had with her, he felt betrayed. A huge disappointment.”
Gianfranco Bonzi was filmed by the camera of the building where he lived for the last time at 6.55pm on Saturday 23 March: he had not brought his wallet, his ATM card, or his credit cards. In the following days, his son Luca was unable to get in touch with him, and had reported his disappearance to the police. On a Facebook group, Bonzi had written a very eloquent post: «This is my last post that I publish and also one of the last actions of my life. The cause is a disappointment in love that I couldn’t handle.».
“I honestly have no other words,” his son announced his death on social media, “but in the end my father was found lifeless on the banks of the Adda, what he said he did in the end! I feel serene and destroyed! Rest in peace dad. It doesn’t matter what you did. We will all love you forever, don’t suffer anymore and please look at me now more than ever.”
