Gianluca Vialli, his words on the disease

«It is not true that cancer is this great enemy to be defeated, it is a challenge to change oneself». Gianluca Vialli wrote it in his book Goals, in the last of the stories: his. In 2017 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and these days he is hospitalized again in the London clinic where he was followed up. “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say: “Thanks to you, I didn’t give up”»he writes in the book.

Last week he announced that he had to temporarily suspend his activity as head of delegation of the national team to be able to use all his strength to cure the disease. The 87-year-old mother went to London with one of Vialli’s brothers because he won’t be able to join them for Christmas. Family members will try not to leave him alone during the holiday season as will the many friends from the world of football already tried by the death of Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Gianluca Vialli has always spoken very openly about the disease. “I hope my story can serve to inspire people who find themselves at the defining crossroads of life. The important thing is not to win; it is thinking in a winning way».

It’s still. «Cancer is an unwanted travel companion. I have to go on, hoping he gets tired and lets me live many more years. I know that because of what happened to me there are many people who think that if I’m fine, they can do it too. I was a player and a strong but also fragile man, and I think someone may have recognized themselves in my story. I’m here with my flaws, fears and desire to do something important».

He explained to Alessandro Cattelan: «I am convinced that our children follow our example more than our words. I have less time to lead by example, now that I know I won’t die of old age. My every behavior leads me to think like this. In this sense I try to be a positive example: I try to teach them that happiness depends on the perspective from which you look at life, that you don’t have to put on airs, listen more and talk less. Laugh often, help others. This is the secret of happiness».
