Gilberto Gil could be the new immortal of the Academia Brasileira de Letras this Thursday

This Thursday afternoon (11), the Brazilian Academy of Letters will elect the new occupant of chair number 20 of the effective membership. Singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil, 79, is the favorite to become the entity’s new immortal.

In addition to Gil, poet Salgado Maranhão and writer Ricardo Daunt are running for election. The vacancy became available after the death of academic and journalist Murilo Melo Filho, in May of last year.

Chair 20 has as patron the physician and journalist Joaquim Manuel de Macedo and once belonged to one of the founders of ABL, Salvador de Mendonça. Emilio de Meneses, Humberto de Campos, Múcio Leão and Aurélio de Lyra Tavares were also occupants of the chair.

The election takes place a week after the actress Fernanda Montenegro was elected to seat 17, being the only candidate for the vacancy. The lack of competitors for the position is pointed out by the medium as a deference to the great lady of Brazilian cinema and dramaturgy. The 92-year-old actress received 32 votes.
