The University Council (Consuni) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) decided to grant the title of honorary doctor to singer and composer Gilberto Gil. The nomination was made by the Congregation of the School of Music and the Council of the institution's Arts and Letters Center and approved this Thursday (8) by Consuni.
According to UFRJ, among the justifications for granting the title is Gil's importance to Brazilian society, not only as an artist, but also as a defender of various humanitarian causes.
Last week, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj) had also decided to grant the title of honorary doctor to Gilberto Gil.
Gilberto Gil was born in Salvador in June 1942 and was one of the icons of Tropicália, a Brazilian artistic movement that emerged in the 1960s. He was Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2008.
He was elected member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) in November 2021 and was inaugurated as an immortal in April of the following year. The UFRJ title must be delivered in April.
