Gilmar Mendes cites the advance of extremism and protectionism: “Certainties of the past have been exhausted”

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes stated, this Wednesday (26), at an event in Lisbon, that the world is experiencing a new reality of the advancement of extremist movements in politics and protectionism in the economy.

“All it takes is a glance at the reality that surrounds us to realize that those certainties of the past have been exhausted in the face of an environment that is increasingly less open and airy – whether in politics, with the growth of extremist movements, or in the economy, a field in which protectionism national teams are gaining more and more strength”, said Gilmar, during the opening speech of the 12th edition of the Lisbon Forum.

According to the minister, recent years have demonstrated a new scenario in the international order.

“If a few decades ago analysts were almost unanimous in proclaiming the victory of the Enlightenment project represented by the protection of Human Rights and the prevalence of peaceful conflict resolution under the leadership of the UN, it is necessary to recognize that the world, through tortuous means, has changed,” he added.

The STF minister’s speeches take place in the context of the victory of far-right parties in the European elections two weeks ago and the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the presidency in the United States.

The minister stated that the current situation takes on even more tragic contours when considering the lack of international consensus on the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. And he added that, given this new situation, “it is worth questioning the role reserved for Brazil”.

“Considering the multiple economic-social problems that involve the Global South, emphasis is placed on the growing role of ‘South-South cooperation’, which represents in the 21st century one of the main trends in terms of international collaboration aimed at stimulating the development of nations, surpassing ideologies and world views that no longer represent the complex international picture we experience,” he said.

The defense of reforms of multilateral institutions, such as the UN Security Council, to reflect the increased relevance of countries in the so-called Global South, of developing nations, is a recurring defense of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

And cooperation between countries of the Global South is another flag championed by the president.

According to Gilmar, through cooperation between the countries of the South, nations previously excluded from major deliberations on the global scene began to play a greater role.
