The planned handover ceremony took place today at the government building, Palazzo Kitzi. As happens with every change of government – and this time – outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi gave the traditional “golden bell” to the new Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni.
As soon as he climbed the stairs of the government building and met Draghi, the Italian politician she shook his hand and said “it’s definitely an emotionally charged moment”. The outgoing head of government and the new prime minister had a detailed conversation lasting one hour and twenty-five minutes.
“This government team will serve the country with a sense of responsibility and pride. Now we are all dedicating ourselves to work,” said Mrs. Meloni in her Twitter post, according to the Athens News Agency.
At the same time, he responded to a message from the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressing: “Many thanks, Madam President. We are willing and ready to work together to strengthen the EU’s resilience in the face of common challenges.”
Addressing, always via Twitter, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, Meloni added: “We are ready to do our best, with the 27 European nations, which work together with the goal of a better Europe and coexist in favor of freedom and democracy”.
At 12.30, local time, the first meeting of the cabinet of the new Italian government will take place, with Giorgia Meloni as prime minister.
Mario Draghi led Italy for twenty months. Today he walked out of the government building Palazzo Kitzi, after being warmly applauded by all the employees.
