«Space is cool». The president of the Italian Space Agency has no doubts George Saccoccia about how pop the world of Space has become in recent years. And much is due to the many initiatives put in place by the Italian Space Agency both to reach the younger age groups but above all to bring the world of space exploration closer to everyone. Because if it remains a privilege for a few, it cannot be an asset for everyone.
“We are not surprised by the great interest shown by so many people in this topic and in the initiatives that we have been putting in place with the Italian Space Agency for the last two years”, says President Giorgio Saccoccia on the occasion of the second National Space Day (December 16), established in 2021 by the President of the Council of Ministers to celebrate the launch of the first Italian satellite San Marco 1, put into orbit in December 1964 which brought our country into the world space Olympus. «Space, we can say, is a trendy, cool, fascinating theme and the most interesting thing is that it is no longer a distant thing that only makes scientists or technicians talk about, but it is something that attracts everyone».
It also happens thanks to extraordinary initiatives such as the astronaut’s landing on TikTok Samantha Cristoforetti, on the occasion of its second space mission, the Minerva of the European Space Agency. The mission, duration 170 days 13 hours and 2 minutes, ended October 14 in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off Jacksonville, Florida. «We are particularly proud, like ASI, of having managed to get Samantha Cristoforetti to talk to boys and girls on TikTok while she was in orbit. With the aim of increasing the interest of the new generations in space exploration and research, telling the “behind the scenes” of life as an astronaut”. The profile has 817,000 followers and millions of views. After having already won the title of first Italian woman to go into space, Samantha Cristoforetti will also become the first “tiktoker” astronaut.
«It was very important for us», continues the president Saccoccia. «It is not trivial because above all we who have a technical background do not often have the right tools to communicate to those who are not in the sector but the nice thing is that now the tools we have today, such as social media, allow us to have filters that act almost as a translation of the message for how it then reaches the general public. It is good that we talk about space also in these terms because in the end we are talking about where the life of our planet will be projected».
Among the numerous initiatives promoted by the Italian Space Agency in the area is the exhibition Exploring Moon to Mars, sponsored by Roma Capitale in which the Italian Space Agency has recently wanted to tell the general public about the exploration of the Moon and Mars, the studies and missions for the future colonization of the two stars and the role of Italy in this adventure . All collected in a large geodesic structure installed in the center of Piazza San Silvestro in the historic heart of Rome.
