The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) seized 12 irregular hunting trophies at a hunter’s residence, through the “Aqua Fortis” operation, carried out this Tuesday (10), in partnership with the Federal Police.
The action aims to combat money laundering from the illegal extraction and trade of gold in mines in the states of Mato Grosso and Pará.
The agents found specimens of species such as hippopotamus, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest and lion at the suspect’s residence. The person responsible for the residence was also notified to explain the absence of a zebra skin mentioned in the documentation, but which was not found at the location.
According to investigations, some of the animals had a certification carried out by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Animals (CITES), which would make them legal in Brazil.
During the operation, agents found 11 taxidermied animal heads and one bird, a technique for preserving dead animals that stuffs them with straw to preserve their physical characteristics.
