Girona is postulated as a destination to attract European night trains

Increased commitment to preserving the environment, added to the liberation of passenger transport by train in Europe -Next December-, has generated the recovery of an old and romantic way of traveling alternative to the plane: the night train, a growing market in the rest of the continent and to which Girona it intends to join by applying as a destination to attract railway companies that provide this service.

This is an opportunity for the tourism sector, as were the coaches that filled many accommodation places in the Costa Brava, charter flights and more recently flights low cost, explains the president of the Girona Chamber of Commerce, Jaume Fega corny.

There are operators that in their expansion plans already count on reaching Barcelona, so we have to be able to put Girona’s offer on the table. We are at the beginning of a new stage in transport and it is worth signing up, “adds the president of the Circle of Infrastructures Foundation, Pere Macias, who as an example of the rise of night train lines cites the 25% increase that this activity is taking in Switzerland, despite the restriction of movements due to the pandemic, or the success of the lines that already operate between Austria Y Germany.

Girona is in a very good position to attract the night trains that European companies are putting in place to compete with each other beyond their own countries. Not only is it geographically located one night’s trip from most European cities, it also has all the necessary infrastructures, it is just about offering the service, ”says Macias.

The European track gauge that facilitates connection with other trains on the continent, the high-speed line compatible with the rest of the lines on the continent or the possibility of foreign tourists connecting directly with the Costa Brava through the station of buses located in the train station itself are some of the advantages that, according to Macias, the city facilities offer.

It also points out that in case European trains need a place to stop while they clean and prepare them for their return trip, the merchandise station located on the outskirts of Girona has the necessary space.

The next step, the Chamber of Commerce commented, is to start promoting the city to attract this type of service, involving different social and economic sectors.
