“Give yourself a hand”: Australian health authorities’ bold post about masturbation

There is nothing wrong with exploring your body and feeling comfortable with it. This is what the Queensland authorities believe in Australia who went a step further and spoke openly on a taboo subject. They surprised their followers on Facebook with some “pleasant” tips for our health.

On its official page on popular social media, Queensland Health made a post about him masturbation, which was accompanied by color infographics that describe in detail its health benefits.

«Give yourself a handSays the title of the post, with one hand and winking emojis. Referring of course to the slang expression for masturbation.

“The best thing is that it concerns all of us”

“Masturbation is a normal and healthy part of a person’s sexual experience and a great way to find out how comfortable you are. The best part is that it is for everyone – and it also offers many health and sexual health benefits! “It is important for all of us to work to normalize positive sexual messages about masturbation in order to reduce the associated feelings of shame and fear and to improve overall sexual health and knowledge of the subject,” the Queensland Health Authority said in a statement.

Humorous comments in response to the post came quickly: “In these difficult times we must” pull “forward together,” someone wrote. “It gives the slogan ‘arm yourself’ a new meaning,” said another, referring to the federal government’s “arm yourself against Covid-19” vaccination campaign.

Another: “Just wonderful! I wonder when all the funny comments will reach the. Peak? ».

The benefits of masturbation

An article accompanying the Facebook post links to peer-reviewed research that has found a link between masturbation and a positive body image in women, and that orgasms can help reduce menstrual cramps.

He also provided recommendations on how to discuss the issue with young people.

A Queensland Health spokesman told the Guardian Australia that the aim of the post was to reduce the stigma associated with masturbation, communicate the health benefits and share tips with parents on how to talk to their children.

“Since masturbation is often considered a taboo subject and this is the first time we talk about it on social media, our team was prepared for a great response from the public and for the world to be shocked.”

“It was wonderful to see that the majority of the responses were positive and that it creates a healthy discussion,” the spokesman said.

“We also wanted to encourage healthy conversations between our younger followers, because we know that the discussion about masturbation naturally flows into discussions about sexual health, self-care and consent.”

“Research shows that the majority of young people get information about their sexual health from online sources and feel ashamed and embarrassed when they talk about masturbation and sex with friends and family. “Unfortunately, many of these online sources are unreliable and unchecked.”

According to data from the 2014 Australian Health and Relationships Survey, conducted once a decade, 72% of men and 42% of women reported masturbating the previous year.

The research found that masturbation was relatively uncommon among younger women, a “disappointing” finding “as it is generally accepted that it has benefits for women in learning about their bodies and negotiating more satisfying sexual practices with partners”.
