Gladiator 2: The first trailer is spectacular, but will the film live up to the original?

It’s been 24 years since Maximum Tenth Meridian he fell in front of a packed audience, but the red sand of the Colosseum in the sequel to Gladiator is even hotter than ever. We notice it in the very first trailer of Gladiator 2the sequel directed by Ridley Scott which takes us back to Ancient Rome and with a new protagonist to whom we can become fond: it is about Luciothe son of Augusta Lucilla (Connie Nielsenthe only one from the first film to return) who will find herself at the centre of an adventure that, judging by the very first trailer, will leave the audience breathless. Years after the death of Massimo at the hands of his evil uncle, Lucio will find himself forced to fight in the Colosseum after his homeland is conquered by two tyrannical emperors who now govern Rome.

With his heart burning with rage and the fate of the Empire hanging by a thread, Lucio will have to face dangers and enemiesrediscovering in his past the strength and honor needed to bring the glory of Rome back to his people, exactly as his grandfather Marcus Aurelius wanted. Making the film spectacular, written by David Scarpa and produced by ParamountPicturesare both the special effects, much more advanced than the first Gladiatorthat the charisma of the new protagonist. It is about Paul Mescalone of the fastest rising actors who, after the success of films like Strangers and as standard Normal Peopleis ready to definitively conquer Hollywood through a blockbuster which has all the credentials to convince and break through the screen.

Together with him also Peter Pascalanother highly appreciated actor who has been consecrated globally thanks to the new course of Star Warsa supervillain Joseph Quinnwho became popular thanks to his role in Stranger Thingsand an old glory like Denzel Washington. It’s hard to predict whether Gladiator 2 will be able to work the miracle of Top Gun: Maverick and not to make us regret the first film, but certainly the production effort by Paramount and the enthusiasm of Ridley Scott are undeniable, who finally had the opportunity to direct the sequel to one of his classics after having missed out on that of Blade Runnerdirected in 2017 by Denis Villeneuve.
