Glassnode: Over 2M BTC Hasn’t Moved Since 2011

The number of bitcoins last moved more than a decade ago reached 2 million BTC, and the number of wallets with a balance of more than 10 BTC fell to a two-year low.

According to the latest data
Glassnode, the whales that mined BTC over 10 years ago, are still holding the coins and not selling their digital gold. Glassnode reports that the amount of BTC stored in wallets and has not moved since 2011 has reached a record high of 2,000,826,416 BTC. Moreover, more than half of this amount probably belongs to the creator of Bitcoin – Satoshi Nakamoto.

On February 9, 2011, Bitcoin reached parity with the US dollar for the first time and was valued at $ 1 on the MtGox exchange. On June 2, 2011, the bitcoin rate rose to $ 10, and a week later it was already $ 32. However, on June 19, 2011, after the first hack of Mt Gox, BTC dropped to a few cents in minutes. Today, the bitcoin rate to the dollar is about $ 58,000.

Many early miners who mined bitcoin in 2011 are still holding cryptocurrencies, or they may have simply lost access to their wallets. Recently, bitcoins worth more than $ 280 million began to move for the first time in seven years – 5,000 BTC were transferred from a wallet that was last used in 2014.

Glassnode also statedthat the number of wallets with a balance of more than 10 BTC fell to a two-year low, now there are just over 148 thousand of them. This may indicate that users are buying more BTC in order to use them as a store of value. According to Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz, retail investors have been actively buying BTC lately. In early March, the bulls managed to raise the price to a new all-time high of $ 61,800.

The activity of retail investors in BTC is also noted by JPMorgan: in the first quarter of 2021, the volume of retail investment in Bitcoin exceeded the investment of institutional investors.
