Glaucoma: understand the disease that made Marrone undergo emergency surgery

The singer Brown from the duo with Bruno, had to go through a emergency surgery on Monday night (17) after being diagnosed with advanced stage glaucoma in both eyes.

The countryman was discharged from CBCO Hospital de Olhos in Goiânia, where the procedure took place, on Monday night, according to the press office.

He must complete 15 days of rest at home while Bruno will continue with the duo’s performance schedule.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. The disease causes patients to gradually begin to lose their visual field and can lead to irreversible blindness.

“It is the main cause of irreversible blindness in the world, and approximately one million Brazilians are affected by the disease”, explained doctor Ione Alexim, ophthalmologist at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz.

According to Alexim, glaucoma can be:

  • congenital : when it is already present during birth and can be treated surgically;
  • secondary : caused after some other factor, such as eye surgery, advanced cataracts, uveitis, diabetes, trauma or use of corticosteroids;
  • chronic : the most prevalent type, which usually affects people over 40 years of age and its main risk factors are genetic predisposition, advanced age, high eye pressure, African descent and thin corneal thickness.

The most common type of glaucoma, chronic open-angle glaucoma, usually manifests itself in both eyes, even though the severity may vary between one eye and the other.

Silent disease

Cases like Marrone’s, in which glaucoma is only discovered at an advanced stage, are common. This is because the main symptom of the disease — loss of vision — is usually not noticeable at first.

As ophthalmologist Juliana Zarate, doctor at Kora Saúde, explained: “The loss of peripheral vision is gradual and often goes unnoticed until it becomes significant. Early detection is often carried out during routine examinations with an ophthalmologist, highlighting the importance of regular visits to the professional.”

Glaucoma treatment

Glaucoma has no cure, but both ophthalmologists emphasized that it is possible to control the disease.

“The main focus is to control and reduce intraocular pressure to mitigate symptoms,” said Juliana Zarate.

According to Ione Alexim: “In general, the treatment is done with the use of eye drops and laser. However, if clinical treatment does not produce satisfactory results, surgery becomes an option.”

Surgery to control glaucoma

There is more than one surgical technique to combat glaucoma, depending on the type and severity of the disease.

According to Alexim, the surgery consists of “opening a channel to improve the circulation of liquid inside the eyes and thus promoting the reduction and better control of intraocular pressure, avoiding increased damage to the optic nerve and consequently irreversible blindness”.
