Actor Matthew Morrison, who played professor Will Schuester (Mr. Schue) on “Glee”, revealed that he had asked to leave the series before the final season.
In a podcast interview And That's You REALLY Missedpresented by Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who played Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang in the series, the actor said that his departure was already certain, but a twist made him change his mind and continue on the series.
“In Season 5, I asked to leave the show, just because I was no longer being used the way I wanted to be used,” Morrison said. “No disrespect to the show. We were at the peak, I thought, 'Maybe if I left the show, I could do something else, make a movie,' and they agreed to let me leave the show.”
However, in 2013, Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died at the age of 31. And, therefore, the program's production had to take a step back regarding Morrison's departure.
“Cory passed away and then they said they couldn’t,” the actor said. “Because you can't let the two main guys on the show [saírem]. So yeah, it was an interesting time.”
“Obviously I understood, I thought 'yes, I understand'. You know, trying to juggle my own selfish wants and needs with the pain of losing an amazing friend, you know, there's a lot of mixed emotions,” Morrison added. “But I’m a professional, I showed up, I did my job. And there was a good pay rise, so it worked too.”
The actor said that he initially took personally the fact that his character appeared less in the series as the seasons progressed, but later understood that this had to do with the age range of the program's target audience.
“I think I took it personally, like I was bad, and that's why my storyline kind of ended. But then I look at the demographic that the show ended up having, you know, it's like, they don't want to see Mr. Schuester, they want to see all the kids. So that made sense to me,” he added.
