Glenn Close warns about the dangers of AI: “the path of no return”

The actress Glenn Close 77, opened up about the jobs crisis affecting the entertainment industry, worsened by use of artificial intelligence in productions and by extreme weather events, such as the recent wildfires in California.

The star of “Fatal Attraction” and “101 Dalmatians” also expressed regret the lack of historical knowledge among Americans explaining how important it is to understand the past to deal with current issues.

“I’m very lucky to have a job. There were already a lot of people affected in Los Angeles, and now with the fires. I was amazed at the number of jobs that exist in our profession”, she said.

“I’m a big reader of history and, unfortunately, I think a lot of people in this country don’t understand history and we’ve just gotten ourselves into it. This is very dangerous,” said the actress in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while participating in the Sundance Institution event.

Glenn said he believes that the advancement of artificial intelligence could intensify political crises, due to its ability to manipulate information . “What will be the truth? What is true will become a big question,” he declared.

Amid recent controversies regarding the use of AI software in Hollywood, such as in “The Brutalist” and “Emília Pérez” – both nominated for this year’s Best Film Oscar -, the artist believes that the technique can raise questions about the limits of the editions.

“It depends on how it is handled. I don’t want my image or my voice to be reconstructed . After all, people need jobs. It’s a sad dilemma. Is it progress if fewer people work because of this? I don’t know,” he said.

She continued, “I think we’re missing something that makes a place like Sundance and Michelle’s work [Satter, diretora da instituição] so important; stories about what it means to be human. We need to hold on to this. We need to keep coming back and being inspired by things that teach us, that help us with our emotions and understand what it means to be human and to look into another person’s eyes – not into a screen, but into the eyes of another human being. If we lose this, I fear we are heading down a path of no return.”
