Global alert for hepatitis cases in children: What is happening in Greece

Unexplained so far hepatitis in young children, mainly under 10 years old, has put the Greek health authorities on alert. The cases are increasing in European countries, such as Britain, Ireland, Spain, but also the USA.

Warnings have been issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), US and European Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC and ECDC), and the British Health Insurance Agency (HSA). However, cases of hepatitis are under investigation and it is not yet known whether they are related to the pandemic or to a completely independent condition due to another factor, with several scientists considering an adenovirus to be the most prevalent “suspect”. reports the Free Press.

As part of the health alarm, the National Organization of Public Health (EODY) is on alert and has already informed the scientific companies related to the liver, as well as the medical associations and pediatricians, asking, if they notice similar cases in Greece, to declare to EODY. Until yesterday (17/4) no such incident had been reported in our country.

Cases abroad

According to his recent post World Health Organization (WHO), on 5 April 2022, the WHO was informed of 10 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children under 10 years of age throughout Central Scotland.

The nine had symptoms onset in March 2022, while one case had onset of symptoms in January 2022. Symptoms included jaundice, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. All 10 cases were identified when hospitalized.

As of April 8, 74 cases had been detected in United Kingdom. In some cases, transfer to specialized pediatric liver units was required, and six children underwent liver transplants. No deaths have been reported since April 11 between these cases.

Laboratory testing has ruled out hepatitis A, B, C and E viruses (as well as D as appropriate), while severe acute coronavirus respiratory syndrome has been detected in several cases. Adenovirus has also been identified in some cases along with coronavirus, in others without coronavirus infection. The United Kingdom has recently observed an increase in adenovirus activity co-circulating with SARS-CoV-2, although the role of these viruses in pathogenesis (the mechanism by which the disease develops) is not yet clear.
