Analysts attribute the steady growth in spending on cloud services to a number of factors, in particular, the fact that a huge number of people continue to work and study remotely. Cloud spending continues to be impacted by the digital transformation efforts required to maintain business continuity during the disruptions associated with the pandemic. In turn, major cloud service providers have focused on expanding geographic coverage of data centers to meet growing demand. However, according to Canalys, expansion opportunities are inevitably affected by a global chip shortage, as suppliers of data center components face increasing lead times and higher prices, which they pass on to equipment suppliers.

“Overall demand for computing resources is outstripping growth in chip manufacturing capacity, and infrastructure expansion could become constrained for cloud service providers,” said Blake Murray, an analyst at Canalys.

With a 32% market share, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the leading cloud provider. The second place with 21% is occupied by Microsoft Azure, and the third is Google Cloud with a share of 8%.
