Global Covid-19 cases approach 250 million

Covid-19 cases worldwide approached 250 million on Sunday as the Delta variant swells slows and trade and tourism resumes, though some Eastern European countries are experiencing record surges.

Over the past three months, the average daily number of cases has fallen by 36 percent, according to an analysis by Reuters.

Even though the spread has slowed, the virus still infects 50 million people every 90 days due to the Delta variant, which is highly transmissible, the analysis showed.

It had taken nearly a year for the first 50 million cases of Covid-19 to be registered.

Health experts are optimistic that many countries have left the worst of the pandemic behind thanks to vaccines and natural exposure, though they warn that colder weather and upcoming holidays could increase cases.

“We believe that between now and the end of 2022 is the point at which we will gain control over this virus, significantly reducing serious illnesses and deaths,” says Maria Van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist at the World Health Organization, told Reuters.
