Around 40 million people could die in the world by the end of the century, in 2100, due to the high temperatures caused by global warming. This is what the most recent report from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), released this Tuesday (8), points out.
The survey shows that deaths can occur mainly among the population of countries in economic development, since they are places with the highest rates of social inequality. The study highlights Latin America, which includes Brazil.
The report also mentions that the number of deaths due to global warming will continue to rise in a global context, if government actions are not taken to avoid further environmental damage to the planet.
“The data show the need to link security between the planet and people. Climate change is likely to become the leading cause of death in many places. About 40 million people could die from changes in temperatures before the end of the century, because of high emissions.” CNN the Director of the Human Development Report Office, Pedro Conceição.
And the number of deaths from weather conditions could still be much higher, according to the UN. The study cites only deaths resulting from high global temperatures, and not from other environmental phenomena caused by climate change.
THE CNNenvironmentalist Mario Moscatelli listed other consequences caused by global warming.
“People are not only affected by high temperatures. Climate change can impact and kill the population in other ways. In addition to climatic extremes, we can observe torrential rains and landslides, which are generated by the uncontrolled deforestation of urban regions and which lead to the burying of people”, highlighted Mario Moscatelli.
