Gloria Perez turns 76: remember the author’s main novels

One of the best-known names in Brazilian television drama, the author Gloria Perez turned 76 this Wednesday (25). Throughout her career, she was responsible for signing more than ten soap operas.

After studying Law for three years, she switched to History and, after graduating, she also completed a Master’s degree in Brazilian History. This experience led her to work as a text researcher on the plot “Memories of Love” in 1979.

A few years later, Gloria Perez was invited to collaborate on the plot of “I promise” written by Janet Clair — a production that opened the doors for her to become the author of her own soap operas.

Remember some of Gloria Perez’s main soap operas:

“Surrogate Mother”

With a controversial theme, Gloria Perez achieved one of her first successes when she signed the soap opera “Barriga de Aluguel” in 1990. Starring Cláudia Abreu, Cássia Kis and Victor Fasano, the plot followed the story of Ana and Zeca, a couple who dream of being parents and, upon discovering that they cannot, resort to hiring Clara, a poor girl to be a surrogate mother.

“Body and Soul”

In 1992, Gloria Perez aired the soap opera “De Corpo e Alma”. Starring Tarcísio Meira and Cristiana Oliveira, the production also featured Daniella Perez, the author’s daughter, who was murdered by Guilherme de Pádua, her castmate, during the filming of the plot.

Although marked by tragedy, the story of the soap opera portrayed the failure of a marriage, after Diogo falls in love again with Betina, a person from his past. However, an accident causes the young woman to die and her heart is transplanted to Paloma — who falls in love with Diogo.

“The Clone”

Another great success by Gloria Perez, the soap opera “O Clone” starred Murilo Benício and Giovanna Antonelli in 2001. In the story, which takes place partly in Morocco, Lucas and Diogo are twin brothers, but after the death of one of them, Albieri decides to clone his surviving son.

“Road to the Indies”

Winner of the International Emmy, the 2009 series starred Juliana Paes and Rodrigo Lombardi. In the Indian-themed soap opera, Maya belongs to a traditional family of merchants who are looking for a good husband for her to marry. Even though she falls in love with Bahuan, the young woman ends up destined to stay with Raj.

“Hail George”

Another plot with an international theme, in “Salve Jorge”, released in 2012, Gloria Perez explored the trafficking of women in Turkey. Starring Nanda Costa and Rodrigo Lombardi, the story followed Morena, a humble and very courageous young woman, who receives an opportunity to work abroad, but ends up being trafficked.

“Crossing”

Gloria Perez’s latest work on television, “Travessia” premiered in 2021, starring Lucy Alves, Romulo Estrela and Chay Suede. In the plot that addressed the technological advances of deep fake, Brisa is the victim of a digital montage, which incriminates her of being a child kidnapper — something that completely changes the heroine’s life.
