Today at the Washington Post Live virtual conference, General Motors (GM) President Mark Reuss provided more details on the chemistry of next-generation GM Ultium batteries. He also announced that it has signed a co-development agreement with lithium metal battery company SolidEnergy Systems (SES).
The GM protected anode lithium metal battery combines affordability, high performance and energy density. The first battery prototypes have already been successfully tested, demonstrating development potential.

To accelerate the commercialization of lithium metal batteries, GM is working with several innovative companies and making investments that will allow the company to scale quickly.
Six years ago, GM Ventures was one of the first investors in SES. The 2015 investment marked the beginning of a close working relationship between SES and R&D organization General Motors. Today’s joint development agreement is the next step in an ongoing collaboration. As part of the agreement, GM and SES plan to build a high-capacity battery pre-production line in Woburn, Massachusetts by 2023.
Lithium metal batteries, due to their higher energy density, are expected to increase mileage per charge while maintaining battery size, or provide comparable mileage with a smaller battery. By reducing the weight and dimensions of the battery, you can unload the electric vehicle or make room for other components.
