GM fires employees via telegram at three factories in SP

General Motors (GM) announced, this Saturday (21), the dismissal of workers at three factories in the state of São Paulo. The layoffs occurred in the cities of São José dos Campos, São Caetano do Sul and Mogi das Cruzes.

Some metalworkers were notified of the layoffs by telegram, according to the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos and region. Employees are also being notified via email.

GM justified the layoffs due to the drop in sales, which led the company to “adjust its workforce”. The car manufacturer did not provide the exact number of people laid off.

For the union, the layoffs were not previously negotiated, which violates an agreement signed with the company.

“The entity demands the cancellation of all dismissals and the reinstatement of all workers,” said the union, in a statement.

Throughout this year, GM made a series of decisions involving the production of vehicles at factories and the routine of workers. The main one was a temporary suspension, or layoff, of 1,200 workers since July, lasting up to ten months.

In a statement, GM explained that the layoffs occurred due to the drop in sales and exports. The company stated that the decision came after trying other alternatives, such as collective vacations, a proposed voluntary dismissal program and the layoff itself.

“We understand the impact that this decision can have on people’s lives, but adaptation is necessary and will allow the company to maintain the agility of its operations, ensuring sustainability for the future”, added the company in the statement.
