GM has received a patent for a training car that does not need an instructor

The American automotive concern General Motors has filed an official patent application for an autonomous vehicle system designed to train new drivers and measure their driving skills without the participation of an instructor. It is worth noting that the patent application clearly states that the new vehicle, which will train and test the skills of users, is intended for use on public roads – this is extremely important, since such an educational method is much more effective than driving on closed tracks. And, of course, the patent itself is unique in its kind – instead of replacing the driver with an autonomous system, GM uses an autonomous system to train a person.

It is also worth noting that we are talking about learning to drive not only in a passenger car – in the application, GM specialists indicate an autonomous vehicle as a car or a truck. The latest system should evaluate and analyze the environment, moving around the city with little intervention from the driver in appropriate situations and tasks. To perform the necessary processes, the car will be equipped with image sensors (cameras located on the body of the vehicle), lidars, GPS modules and more. A standard set for any unmanned vehicle.

Accordingly, the new autonomous vehicle system will prepare the driver for a future in which the driver will rely on autonomous control in most situations, but still occasionally take control. The patent even lists various sensors and technologies that will evaluate a student’s progress on the road based on real-time data from the vehicle. The system should evaluate how correctly the student uses the brake pedal, steering wheel, gas pedal and other controls.
